Chicago Park District President Myetie Hamilton acknowledged the excellence and history of Black History Month. President Hamilton shared that 50 parks are named after prominent Black leaders.

CPD is building a legacy for equity and justice. In our city for the youth. Also, CPD has done an amazing job to honor Black History through many events.

CEO Rosa Escareno of the Chicago Park Districtshared in the meeting the history of Black History http://Month.It was started by Carter G. woodson in 1962 as 1 week in February. Then in 1976 it was the adopted for the entire month.

CEO Escareno stated that the CPD has several opportunities for residents to become involved in different activities and building bridges between all cultural backgrounds.

Director Tunks mentioned all the of the events at the parks. They have Vendor fairs, Civil Rights walks, and Family fun nights. On this weekend February 18 at Homan Square Community Center. There will be a Umoja Celebration for families with performances, storytelling and food.

Director Tunks introduced the Columbus Park Line Dancers. Who are a group of seniors who performed at the meeting.

Those members of the community who signed up to give comments. Were given 2 minutes to share concerns and comments to the board.

Bobby Townsend voiced that Mandrack Park needs a new roof. CHA owns the building but, it is a park district facility. She also, said it needs a freezer, stove, and a security guard with a gun. “We are loosing our children.”

Mr Spicer wanted the board to vote to preserve Promontory Point.

Julia Backtrack reinstated about about Promontory Point being a Historical Landmark.

There were also concerns from Jen for Promontory Point as well as Reese and Douglas Parks.

Kendra Parson wanting the board to make Promontory Point needs to be protected.

Other residents were concerned about outdoor festivals in quiet zones near hospitals. And concerts in residential areas without community engagement meetings.

The Board did vote to approve to make Promontory Point a Historical Landmark. This has been 20 years in the making. The Chicago Park District needs approval to purchase vacant lots around the city to make 4 new parks and to expand 19 others.

The Board also approved large scale events that will be happening this fall and summer. Single Day events and multiple day events. The meeting was called at 12:55pm. The next meeting will be on March 15, 2023 at Fosco Park Field House.
